If you are a student or professional in healthcare delivery or public health, Patriots has several opportunities for you to contribute your skills or to learn more about health care delivery in a developing country. We provide health volunteering and internship opportunities in partnership with the Ghana Health Service and private health institutions in Ghana.

In addition to opportunities in direct healthcare delivery, Patriots Ghana offers positions to work in public health, working towards better access and health awareness in several communities in Ghana. The public health team is involved in several projects, including giving educational talks at local schools on health topics including HIV/AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis, reproductive health and performing research projects on various public health topics. Research projects vary from communities based on the needs that Patriots Ghana would like to address.

Home visits: other activities of the volunteer includes community home visits where the volunteer visits homes within a particular or selected community to mainly check the health status of infants, adolescent, the aged and pregnant women. With the help of a local interpreter, volunteers can also provide health education or advice in several health topics including family planning, personal hygiene, nutrition, exclusive breast feeding for lactating mothers and many more depending on the need of the particular household.

Health screening in schools: Duties within schools could include the physical examination and weighing of the kids, dressing of wounds, deworming, checking for malnourished children and making referrals and follow ups where necessary.

If you are a student or professional in the field of business, finance and any business related programs with ideas or interest in micro finance you could volunteer on this project. The project works primarily in 2 areas:

Assisting women, youth, and citizens in deprived communities, in Agriculture, Arts and small trade to obtain small micro-loans to be able to start-up small business on their own or to expand their existing small businesses.
Provide financial training for these women and youth to be capable of managing their business and also manage their finances well to ensure success in trade and hence be sustainable.

As a volunteer in Patriots Ghana teaching program, you will be assigned to one or more local schools where you can use your expertise to improve the education of Ghanaian children. You may choose any age of children, including Kindergarten, primary school, junior high or high school and request specific subjects depending on your knowledge or interests including, but not limited to mathematics, science, English, reading comprehension, computer studies, and French. Past volunteers have even taught physical education in addition to coaching the local football (soccer) teams after school. Feel free to request a subject not listed above and Patriots will do our best to find a school that needs a teacher for that subject.

Additionally, teaching volunteers may assist on other educational projects such as organizing quiz competitions amongst partner schools and improving reading habits amongst school children.

A placement with Patriots Stop Child Labour & Trafficking Project will involve working directly with children and their families, fishermen and schools to stop rampant child labour and trafficking practices in Ghana. The program aims to educate and raise awareness about children’s rights in the affected areas. Volunteers and interns work with project staff approximately five to eight hours a day and collaborate on every aspect of the project. Tasks include conducting interviews with child labour and trafficking victims and the fishermen who hire them, entering and analyzing the data, attending meetings with community leaders to discuss findings, negotiating solutions to rescue children, writing project reports and proposals for donors and assisting with daily office duties. Patriots Volunteers and interns also participate in the selection of children eligible for sponsorships to return to school. During the school year, volunteers and interns are instrumental in presenting a child labour and trafficking education programme to local school children and can also teach in local schools where rescued children study.
