The initiative primarily targets 1) emerging young leaders with innovative and profitable business ideas and 2) young leaders with startup businesses looking for opportunities to scale their businesses. The initiative at the pilot stage recruits 15 to 30 youth business leaders, annually. The 6-month training will be preceded by three months of active recruitment and selection process. The recruitment process includes 1) creating and opening an online application form, 2) review of applications, 3) interviewing semi-finalists, 4) finalists notified and 5) GEI training code of ethics and offer terms signed by both the finalist and the National Coordinator of Patriots Ghana.

Mentoring component to as ongoing support. Additionally, a mentoring component is built into the program to support young fellows who may need additional coaching after the training. The mentor matching will be based on need assessment during the training sessions.

Why GEI Fellowship?

Unemployment in Ghana has been a major problem that has directly affected the socio-economic development of the country for many decades. The unemployment situation in Ghana, especially among young people poses a security risk that negatively contributes to social, economic, and political instabilities. According to the World Bank, Ghana’s unemployment rate is currently at 4.7 as of 2021, and the average for the world is currently at 6.2. However, a study conducted by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) and presented to Ghana’s parliament in March 2022, found that 1.74 million out the 13 million working population in Ghana were unemployed in the first of 2022. Ghanaians home and abroad have always identified unemployment as a major problem in the country. In 2017, this led to the formulation of an entire government ministry to help address this issue. In 2017, under Sections 11 and 13 of the Civil Service Act, 1993 (PNDC Law 327) the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations (MELR) was created. In the past decade, there has many interventions from both private and government sectors to address unemployment in Ghana, however, the scope of the problem is beyond the currently operational interventions.

At the core of the unemployment problem in Ghana is a need for a change in mindset about employment and a renewed approach to addressing unemployment. Our project will facilitate a comprehensive approach to addressing youth employment by increasing young Ghanaians interest in self-employment and for the first time introducing entrepreneurship workshops at the elementary level. In the long run, we will create a new generation of successful young Ghanaians passionate about entrepreneurship with access to financial resources and partnerships.
